Watercolour, Ink & pen
This is a preliminary sketch for the oil of the same name (private collection). Brill lived and worked near Lavenham in Suffolk, where the Phoenix Gallery sold much of his work. He was born in London and studied under Henry Tonks at the Slade after a period at St Martin’s Central School of Art. He won the Prix de Rome and was at the British School in Rome in 1927. Although he painted many traditional Suffolk scenes (though in his very distinctive style) he was very interested in the ordinary man, this picture showing the spiritual elevation of a farmer. His work is held by the Tate and he also exhibited at the Royal Academy.
