Steer was a leading figure in the Impressionist movement in Britain, being influenced by both the French Impressionists and also the earlier British. Steer studied in Paris where he became a follower of the Impressionist school. When he returned to England, Steer established a studio in London and began to develop his style – so clearly seen here – in which he depicted seascapes in a silvery translucent light.
