James Gorman was born in Scotland. He studied mural painting at the Glasgow School of Art. He was subsequently commissioned to paint murals, including for Trinity College Glasgow. He was influenced by Edward Burra and Stanley Spencer, and these influences can clearly be seen in this study, which dates from early in his career. At some point he was asked to prepare drawings for a mural for the British Legion and this is one of his resulting works. He has extended the paper to make the design fit. A few years after this work, Gorman started exhibiting with the Glasgow Group.
