Poynter was a late Victorian neo-claccisist. He painted many reconstructions of events of ancient history as well as mythological studies. He was hugely successful, becoming President of the Royal Academy in 1896 in succession to Millais. He was a beautiful draughtsman and his drawings are very rare.
