Description

John Humphrey Spender, was the younger brother of the poet Stephen Spender. He was probably best known for his photographs of life in working class Britain but he also always painted, and from the mid-1950s he abandoned photography to devote his full attention to what he considered a superior fine art, supplementing his income by working as a tutor in the textile school at the Royal College of Art from 1953 where he designed textiles and, amongst other things, taught Zandra Rhodes.
