Watercolour and pencil. Signed and dated 1925.
Ernest Blaikley was an official war artist in the First World War as well as curator of the Imperial War Museum. He was perhaps best known as a graphic artist, having studied under Frank Emanuel, the great printmaker, and he was a founder member, with Emmanuel and Frank Brangwyn, of the Society of Graphic Art. They strongly believed that skilful and technically accurate draughtsmanship underlay all good art. This picture shows his delicate drawing skills clearly.
