Cecil Beaton famously designed the costumes for ‘My Fair Lady’ and won an Academy Award in 1964 for doing so. This is Beaton’s most finished portrait of Audrey Hepburn as the flower seller and is a near mirror image of his famous photograph of the same subject. Julie Andrews had played the lead in the Broadway play but producer Jack Warner wanted Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle for his film. Hepburn was well-known and her films never lost money. She is now fully associated with the film but at the time it was a controversial decision.
